Giorgio Armani S/S 2010 -- Armani Exchange S/S 2010 // Dolce & Gabbana S/S 2010 -- D&G S/S 2010
One out of 65,476,412 pet peeves of mine is when people have a problem differentiating the difference between a designer’s diffusion line and their signature line. Not a lot people understand this concept, that’s why I’m constantly found with my eyes rolled to the back of my head and ears completely tuned out.
A diffusion line is a comparatively
Signature Line ----> Giorgio Armani ---> $$$$
Diffusion Line -----> Armani Exchange -----> $
Diffusion Line -----> Armani Exchange -----> $
Got it? Because being the label whore driven person that I am, I’m not afraid to call you out and rip you a new one. I’m tired of people parading around and calling their outfits Dolce & Gabbana when really it’s only D&G Jeans. I’m generally not impressed with labels anymore. It really should be about the fit and quality of the merchandise. Those should be the determining factors of whether something looks good on you and not about the label tag that's sewn on the inside of that garment!
So, what is your personal take on designer's diffusion lines?

fit and quality 100%. good post!

I am quite anti the diffusion lines especially Armani Exchange. OK D&G are kind enough to some of us aspiring for the real thing, but at the end of the day it's all too much. Like the JUST CAVALLI jeans that a lot of nouveau riche eastern European girls love to flaunt (puke). Sweetheart it's just Cavalli without the Roberto. The day Dior or Chanel even dare do that, I swear to God I will go up to Uncle Karl and Uncle Galliano and personally bitch slap them ! Hahaha.
and. ps./ whether you publish this or not, thanks for the comment. As cute as guys my age can be, mentally they can be 10 years behind the physical development side. And being with an older (and I admit richer) guy has enabled me to improve myself in many aspects. It's not just getting money for shopping, it's if I need to pay bills but also take a course that helps further my education, etc that matters. And that's why for me this is someone who is, I hate to use the word "grooming" me, to be a better woman if you get what I mean.
Agreed!!!!! Ugh it drives me nuts when people strut around in Armani Exchange and calling it Armani! IT'S NOT THE SAME!!! Especially Armani exchange is just as gaudy and attracts the same type of douchebags as Ed Hardy etc.
Personally I find myself pro-diffusion lines solely for the fact that for some people that may not be able to afford standard collection goods, this is their way to have that minimal connection.
I have to say people that wear Armani Exchange are the biggest culprits of "forgetting the other half.." What i mean by this term is that.. Ok wait, just read this story.. I had a friend who bought a nice cardigan from somewhere, I had no idea so i asked, she said Armani. I said oh nice which one, she then said armani exchange... lol.. DONT BE AFRAID PEOPLE
I think If some people own a pair of-
for example, D&G aviators like myself. They'll call it Dolce & Gabbana just to make it seem like they got bread, which isn't always the case -or they just have no idea what the difference is between Marc by Marc Jacobs & Marc Jacobs...
Completely agree! Thank you for that insightful clarification :) Love the 'tude, man. That's what keeps me coming back here! And your fierce style, ofc.
Totally agree! I hate how people brag about wearing Armani Exchange when anyone can afford that stuff. Not impressed.
On the other hand, I'm not much of a label whore though and I just wear whatever looks good. I loveeee fashion but I'm the kinda girl who would rather spend my money on books and gadgets. =P
You can't blame ignorant people, they're just misinformed but if you inform them and then they make the same mistake, feel free to bitch them out I say ;)
I'm pro diffusion lines provided that they maintain a good standard of quality and design. Those crappy ass Target collabs are just insulting.
Personally, I'm used to thinking of the diffussion lines as of a youthful version of a brand's merchandise - which most of them are usually portrayed like anyway. It's just a different approach to style - to each their own.
You honestly have no idea how alike you and me are! At least when it comes to fashion ideas and thoughts and opinions! I absolutely hate when people do not know the difference between diffusion lines or simply anything about fashion period. For example when hey get prints or fabric wrong. I hate it! Like you don't know! I also so strongly agree with your fit and quality being more important when it comes to shopping for clothing. It really is the most important thing. I pay very close attention to the fit and quality of my clothing because it simply can make or break a look. My mom literally doesn't buy any clothing for me unless I am there present with her because she knows how important the fit and quality are for me.

as a college student without a steady income, i love the fact that diffusion lines exist, but i am with you on the fact that it's annoying as shit when people try to pull of diffusion as original. what's worse are when people go to new york on vacation and bring back their "oh my god look, chanel!" bags that they bought on the street for $20 and they say it's real.
True true... well said.
:)

great post.
i dont have anything against diffusion lines. it's cool if you like them. i had AX sunglasses and a marc by marc jacobs tee shirt.
BUT I DO STRONGLY OBJECT TO PEOPLE WHO TRY TO BE BRAND WHORES BUT DONT ACTUALLY HAVE THE GOODS TO BACK IT UP. There is nothing wrong with not being able to shell out thousands for chanel, armani or cavallie BUT PLEASE dont pretend like you can. you may be fooling ur dumb relatives but i know better.
i went to high school with a kid who kept on referring to his quiksilver hoodies as designer and it took all the poise in me not to smack him. once again, nothing wrong with quiksilver - BUT IT'S NOT DESIGNER AND STOP PRETENDING IT IS.
i have the same problem with this as i do with ppl who buy fake designer shizz. why pretend u can afford the real thing when you cant - aint nothing wrong with aldo.
Quality and fit ALL THE WAY. You know what I hate? Self-absorbed people walking round Van with designer everything plastered all over their bodies. Why? Only because they have LABELS on them. However, they fail to realize that no matter how hard they try, they still look like douche bags and idiots. Just because you've got name brand written all over you doesn't mean you've got style! I bet they can't even afford it half the time... unless they're DDs of course. HUGE pet peeve!
xo
Armani always rocks.
You should totally do a post with a list of all the Designer/ Fusion Line names! It would be very educational for some people...(cough cough...although I mainly thrift shop and rock Banana Republic and Louis Vuittons)
I had no idea. First time I've even heard of such a thing as a diffusion line. That's why I read your blog, so I can learn something new :)
I don't mind. BUTT with 2 Ts! LOL I have noticed people who some blogs that says Michael Kors but it's really MICHAEL Michael Kors... "Rodarte" but forgets to say for "Target". Or "Norma Kamali" for "Walmart"!! It bugs me especially when I go out of my way to know and find out the difference.
Ooh I'm learning something new everyday! Very spot on with the explanation.
I'm so far from being label impressed and even more turned off when someone is wrapped up with very visible labels.
It doesn't matter the name, I prefer a fit and style over brands.
cant agree more with this post! quality and fit are the most important thing.
Although there are certain differences, but
personally i dont mind if i find really nice thing on the diffusion line.
but seriously no need to brag about labels like thinking that diffusion line is the same as designer's main line. not a good way to impress people.
xoxo
i actually dont mind diffusion lines. today its best to be able to keep up with the market needs or the actual signature line might not be able to sell well anymore ! (and thus we fashion lovers will be loosing more and more famous brands..)
but i do agree with you about the fit and quality. i buy clothes based on that not the tags.. if i can find something cheap but it looks good on me, then i'll buy it . i hate it when people judge you by whats on ur body not wats inside..
I know what you mean, but sometimes I'm totally guilty of referring to my Marc by Marc Jacobs bag as a Marc Jacobs. I always end up having to explain to my friends the difference between MbMJ and MJ and in the end, they don't care, hahaha.
Ditto to all the comments and your post. I can't stand ppl who front. Sorta funny story... I walked into Just Cavalli in Hong Kong and didn't see anything I liked, so my friend was like: "duh, because it's JUST cavalli, not Roberto cavalli." lol
will you do a filthy post on brand whores in the future? Eg. Those plastered in monogram from head to toe? :)
Diffusion lines are good when done right, but knowing Vancouver, AX and D&G can be seen on kids running around in North Face jackets haha.
So right! And it's all about fit and the quality...after that it's how you take matters into your own hands and style it to be your look.
hahaha. i feel you man!
i totally dig all this ads, they are so seductive all the time!
So sexy!
Saw a documentary about the evolution of luxury lines..where before it was a exclusive showcase of clothes to a privileged group. Now it's all about going mainstream, appealing to mass market, and making the $. And the results are sometimes sub par quality
oh wow, those armani pics are wunderful. love them
thank you for shedding some light onto the ones that are still in the dark.
I gotta say that your style is fucking fierce & the way your put together outfits is oh-so classic with a bit of edge... just how I like. Keep it up.

P.S. - Come visit.
So with you on this one. These kinds of comments piss me the fuck off. It's just like when people say "buying fakes is OK, because doesn't everyone deserve to wear designer goods?". Mother of PEARL, if you can't AFFORD the REAL shit, then you sure as hell don't ever deserve to wear it. Until you CAN afford a real Chanel, etc. find quality in a better-priced-for-you, non-knockoff.
How I love your straightforwardness Peter. SO MUCH.
hahaha you know whats so funny? i was JUST having this conversation with my roommate about how there's a difference between giorgio armani, armani emporio, and armani exchange. i guess to some people it's all the same, but i personally don't have a problem with diffusion lines as long as its done right. i feel like a lot of designers have tried and failed though, making their original line look a lot cheaper
xx lue
haha finally someone speaks up about this issue!

thx for the comment on my blog
hoping for a new post from you soon !

lol, can't believe ppl actually claim to be wearing the signature line like that, it just goes to show how naive (or willingly dumb) some people are.
great lesson post though! you should do more of these, kind of like "what not to wear" but different.
love the blog facelift, the new banner looks great! xo

I know that you are griping but all I can think is DAVID GANDY DAVID GANDY DAVID GANDY when I look at this post.
MM x
Actually, I like them there moderately-priced ranges of high-end designers... mainly because I'm a stingy lil' bitch and/or flat broke all the time - BUT I don't try to punk off my Jimmy Choo for H&M kicks as straight up Jimmy Choos, because they are not.
Let's be honest, here. Having a pair of Jimmy Choos for $8-900 would be nice, but seeing as I'd have to spend up to $4-500 on shipping fees and import taxes... it's just not going to happen anytime soon.
I think my point of this little rant is mostly "if you're gonna buy the cheaper range - be honest" - aaand.... wanted to say hi :) Been reading this for a little while now, and not yet introduced myself. Shame on me, I know.
:)
I think good design is good design.
Regardless of what price point you can afford, I totally agree that it is about how it looks on you, and how you wear it rather than the label sewn inside.
Bragging about which line you're wearing is totally gauche anyway, whether it's say, Marc Jacobs Collection, Marc by Marc Jacobs, or Stinky Rat. Besides, even Chanel's couture line is differentiated from Ready To Wear and their Resort Collection.
I think it was the Laura Mullavey who said of their Rodarte line Target's Go Global, "it's just away to have our design and aesthetic available to a wider audience". I can only aspire to own a Proenza Schouler piece, but their line from back in '07 at Target opened the possibility to get a piece of Jack and Lazaro's eye for detail and overall vision without having to take out another mortgage.
Spectacular images.
