I am literally the worst person when it comes to remembering people’s names. I totally have dementia and a hard time remembering things. I blame it on the fall I had one time when I was riding a bike without a helmet because I didn’t want helmet hair and as a result to the price of beauty over safety, I WENT STUPID!
I could have been introduced to you about 3 minutes ago and still without a sip of a cocktail of some sort, I would have completely forgotten your name and wouldn’t have a clue of the first letter! So about end of the night I would just swagger around at the party referring to everyone as ‘hun’ or ‘babe’ and pretending that I knew who they were.
But that’s not even the tip of the iceberg of embarrassing things that I’ve done. The absolute worst is when I introduce myself to someone thinking that I have not met them, but really I already have, and that person would reply, “We’ve met, nice to see you again, Peter”. OUCH. FML! I am completely guilty of doing this numerous times and I should be shot in the face with a paint ball gun because it is the rudest, humiliating and disrespectful thing, which I never intentionally mean to do! So, now I just keep my mouth closed and smile with my eyes, hoping that others would just introduce themselves to me. However with my severe dementia, I would just end up referring to them as ‘hun’ later in the night anyways!

But then again, if you were this bitch pictured above who CRASHED a party (no pun intended), looking fabulous like this, I would definitely remember and would want to know a lot more than just your name!

I have the same problem!!!
There is just one way for me to remember the names after the 3 minutes period, if I writte it down or if the person gives me a card.
There is nothing more embarrassing for me then to talk to someone for hours and later, when I ask the phone number, I can't remember the name!
I saw you listed my blog as "your bitch"! Cool! :)

Bwah I'm the same way! I've had plenty of people forget my name too, although I never take it personally--after all, petite Asian girls are a dime a dozen in Vancouver and I have a pretty eponymous name and face. :)
If I do forget someone's name, I'm usually upfront about it. An earnest smile and a "I'm sorry I'm such a scatterbrain, but..." go a long way toward smoothing ruffled feathers!
I am horrible with names. Like really horrible.
I suck at names. I'm better at faces and visuals. Need directions? I'll draw you a map without road names, LOL.
"I would just swagger around at a party referring to everyone as ‘hun’ or ‘babe’ and pretending that I knew who they were." HIGH FIVE for playing it off. I would never know.
hahaha.. i totally LOVE you for this post! finally... someone who shares my sentiments! i have the WORST time with names, even with people i knew i "bonded" with in the past.. lol.. funny thing is that i also get accosted by people who i absolutely don't rmember meeting. so that means 1) i really do have bad memory, and 2) i probably get really frisky with just about anyone when i'm drunk (and don't remember a thing in the morning)! lol.:P
have a good week gorgeous!

OMG I just did that at a wedding!! I chatted with the girl beside me, shook her hand and introduced each other and my boyf... few minutes later I whispered to my boyf and asked him what the girl's name was... he sucked at remembering people's names more than I do. The place cards didn't help coz the girl's supposed to sit 2 chairs away from me.
You are so bad. I love it :D

I find remembering names an absolute pain, particularly when you barely remember the face. I tend to get around it with a perfunctory 'Hey....YOU'.

I have the same problem. If your worse then me it must be pretty dam bad lol.
Love your honesty great post
I am so bad at names too! But it's partly my fault because I have a hard time listening... it's a bad habit but I'm TRYING to fix it. And also because I meet a lot of people in loud places like clubs where I'm already buzzed so next time they come up to talk to me as if we've met, I just give them a blank stare.
My friends tell me I do this hand-wave -"nevermind" thing when I'm drunk to people because I'm talking to someone thinking it's someone else then I realize it's not them so I'm like... "nevermind" *waves hand rudely in front of their faces & walks away*
I swear I didn't realize I was doing that. I feel sooo bad! =S
An effective approach to remembering names is by using their name in a sentence right after they introduce themselves. For example:
"Hi Peter, I'm Paige, nice to meet you. Did you enjoy your summer?"
"Yes Paige, I did, thank you for asking."
Deliberate use of someone's name can help to lock it in your head and also do a face-to-name. That, or say their name in your head three times right after they say it. Repetition is the best way to remember anything.
